At concerts, why do some clap at the start of the song intro and others applaud as soon as the vocalist sings?

If you compare the audience at concerts over the years, you'll notice that some applaud the performer(s) either as soon as the song starts or as soon as they start singing. Does it depend on the performer? I know that quantity of performers don't matter, considering Bob Dylan and David Bowie concerts.
