My signet ring looks like it's been chewed by an old man like Lord Lucan and then spat out... Is that normal?

I've had it for 5 years now since my father died and I became the head of my family aswell as the heir to his barony. My mother had it made for me on my 19th birthday, since I am a student I am very active a do loads of stuff. I usually keep my ring on all the time unless I go to sleep, now there is a good patina on it, many bumps, scratches... My mother says its ugly when it looks all new and shiny and it is much better now, I agree to a certain extent but the bumps do disturb me a little aswell as the fact that the engraving (which is intaglio as it should be but not very deep, well deep enough to seal but not as deep as Prince Charles' ring for instance because the ring is quite small (Okay, not that small, just smaller than Prince Charles')), Anyway, what do you think? Does this state add value to the ring? I mean I don't want to look like a nouveau riche with ursupated arms when I lunch at Claridges... And I certainly do not want to have it polished!
